Please note the correct date for the cooler is circa 1839-1851, the butter cooler is not marked 'Sterling' as is listed in the cataloguing. The cooler is made of silver, the term 'Sterling' was not marked on American silver at the time of the cooler's manufacture. In the United States, the general adoption of sterling silver as the standard of purity was after 1868. There is a small horizontal split to the silver on one of the legs.
