Lot Essay

Le recto est préparatoire au tableau La Madeleine dans le désert (Paris, musée Eugène Delacroix, inv. MD 1990-1; L. Johnson, The paintings of Eugène Delacroix. A Critical Catalogue. III. 1832-1863, Oxford, 1986, no. 429) tableau que Baudelaire apprécia tout particulièrement lors de sa présentation à l'Exposition universelle de 1855: 'Voici la fameuse tête de la Madeleine renversée, au sourire bizarre et mystérieux, et si surnaturellement belle qu'on ne sait si elle est auréolée par la mort ou embellie par les pâmoisons de l'amour divin'.
