American Art

Sale Overview

Our 22 May American Art auction features a superb selection of paintings, sculpture and works on paper spanning all genres of the category. American Modernist highlights include paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe, Arthur Dove and Marsden Hartley from the Michael Scharf Family Collection, Edward Hopper’s Windy Day sold to benefit The Prospect Hill Foundation, as well as a fantastic Maine shipyard painting by George Bellows offered by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Norman Rockwell’s famed World War II Saturday Evening Post cover The Homecoming and a Deerslayer painting by N.C. Wyeth lead our group of American Illustration. Stellar examples by nineteenth-century masters, including Sanford Gifford, John Frederick Kensett and Albert Bierstadt, represent the Hudson River School. The sculpture selection is led by an Augustus Saint-Gaudens once owned by Stanford White, as well as exceptional models by Gaston Lachaise, Elizabeth Catlett and Herbert Haseltine. Iconic Impressionist works by Childe Hassam, William Merritt Chase and John Singer Sargent round out the sale, alongside Western works by Alfred Jacob Miller, Henry Farny and Walter Ufer.

All lots will be on view in our Rockefeller Center galleries from Saturday, 18 May-21 May.
